Lammert, Will Standing Figure I (unfinished) Bronze with a dark brown patina on a bronze plinth. 1957/89. 127 x 27 x 20 cm. Signed by the foundry and dated on the reverse side of the plinth. Lammert 188. The woman stands upright and straight, despite her emaciated body and haggard features with a vacant gaze. The sculptor brings the surface of the bronze to life through his treatment of it. Originally, the “Standing Woman” was created as part of a group of figures “intended to be placed at the foot of the pylon at the National Memorial and Remembrance Site of the former Ravensbrück Women’s Concentration Camp, alongside the ‘Bearer’ (B I 718).” Lammert created a group of 15 women and girls whose faces and bodies are marked by hunger, suffering, and the fear of death.” (smb.museum, accessed September 15, 2026). After completing his apprenticeship as a stucco, stone, and wood sculptor, Lammert initially worked in the studio of the Russian sculptor Moissey Kogan. He soon began exhibiting with the artist collective Das Junge Rheinland. After moving to Essen, both Hermann Blumenthal and Fritz Cremer began their artistic careers in his studio. During the Nazi era, Lammert was placed on the Gestapo’s wanted list for high treason and was forced to emigrate via the Netherlands to Paris in early summer 1933. After returning from exile, he devoted himself primarily to designing the Ravensbrück Memorial Site, but left behind numerous unfinished designs upon his death. A magnificent later cast of the unfinished bronze sculpture, featuring an expressive patina. Very rare; one of only four known castings. We thank Mark Lammert, Berlin, for his helpful information dated September 16, 2026. Provenance: Private collection, Berlin - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not specified in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
