Böttcher, Manfred Autumn Landscape Oil on canvas. 1970. 70 x 90 cm. Signed “Böttcher” in black with a brush in the lower right and dated; on the reverse, on the stretcher, there is a note from the estate confirmed by Heidemarie Woitinek, as well as a mounted label with the date and title. A vivid and dynamic autumn landscape rendered in a rich variety of brown, yellow, and green tones, executed with a sweeping, fluid brushstroke. A sense of vibration fills the pictorial space, seeming to express the rustling and falling of leaves in the autumn wind. Böttcher studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1955, under Wilhelm Lachnit and Heinz Lohmar, among others. His classmates there included Werner Stötzer, Dieter Goltzsche, and Harald Metzkes, who remained his artist friends throughout his life. He subsequently became a master student under Heinrich Ehmsen at the German Academy of Arts in Berlin. His life partner was the textile artist and painter Heidemarie Woitinek.
