Metzkes, Harald The Red Room Oil on canvas. 1989. 60 x 80 cm. Signed "Metzkes" in red with a brush and dated in the lower left corner. Deserted yet deeply imbued with life, the artist depicts the red-toned interior with the door in the center glowing, as if by magic, in a blood-red hue. “I cannot shake the notion that the whole world is not merely composed of details. […] As a painter, I am an observer of a world theater in which the world unfolds—not behind it.” (Harald Metzkes, 1994, cited from harald-metzkes.de, accessed September 14, 2026). Metzkes studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Wilhelm Lachnit and Rudolf Bergander and was a master student of Otto Nagel in Berlin from 1955 to 1958. Along with Manfred Böttcher, Lothar Böhme, and Konrad Knebel, among others, he was a founding member of the so-called “Berlin School.” Provenance: Private collection, Berlin - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only listed in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
