Lenk, Franz "Fog on the Lower Rhine" Watercolor and pencil on cardboard. 1959. 49.7 x 71 cm. Monogrammed "F.L." in pencil lower right (joined) and dated, titled and inscribed "9." verso. From Abercron E-59-1. A motionless stillness and melancholy mood fills the deserted landscape. Lenk masterfully uses the finely differentiated pencil technique to depict the fog with blurred, indistinct contours on the rough, gray-blue grounded picture surface. The sky takes up most of the composition. Romantic elements and New Objectivity are successfully combined in the artist's completely realistic, unsentimental pictorial approach. The outer dimensions differ slightly from those given by Abercron.
