Itten, Johannes Circles and Squares Oil, tempera, black brushstrokes, and watercolor on cardboard. 1963. 15.7 x 24.2 cm. Signed “Itten” in pencil and dated in the lower right corner. Itten 1150, Wagner II 1963-036-W. This small-format work on paper exemplifies Itten’s late visual language, which focused on the autonomous effect of color and form. Two bright blue circles form the center of the composition, in the midst of which the grid-like structure of red, green, gray, and ochre squares appears to dissolve. The impasto paint, applied in a manner that is at times relief-like, lends the otherwise strictly geometric construction a tactile, almost expressive character. Provenance: Formerly D.
