Fleer, Fritz Little Shepherd Bronze with a black-brown patina. 1965. 21.2 x 16.7 x 22.5 cm. Monogrammed "fl" and dated on the underside. The figure of the shepherd, sitting relaxed on the ground with his arms and legs bent, conveys an atmosphere of calm and serenity—a variation on thematically related basic figures that the sculptor repeatedly explored. Fritz Fleer studied from 1946 to 1950 at the Hamburg State Art School (Hamburger Landeskunstschule), later the Hamburg University of Fine Arts (HFBK), under Gerhard Marcks and as a master student of Edwin Scharff. As a freelance sculptor, he began creating representational works in 1950; his bronze figures appear as stylized and reduced archetypes in a formally austere and clear design. A magnificent, finely chiseled cast with an even, matte-shimmering patina. Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany Lit.: Fritz Fleer. Themes and Variations. Works 1941–1991. Exhibition catalog, Gottorf Castle, Schleswig, 1992, cat. no. 60 - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
