Broner, Erwin Untitled Mixed media with collage on canvas. 1962. 90 x 130 cm. Monogrammed "eb." in white with a brush in the lower right corner, on the reverse side of the stretcher, signed twice in black with a brush as “E. BRONER” and “ERWIN BRONER,” respectively, and dated. Broner created this large-format painting in Ibiza; at its center is a collaged newspaper page featuring local news. Softly contoured areas of color and lines surround the collage and seem to float against the white background, textured with sand and pigments. After studying in Munich and Stuttgart, Broner became a student of Karl Albiker and Oskar Kokoschka in Dresden in 1920. As a Jewish communist, the son of the Munich banker Heilbronner, and an outspoken opponent of the NSDAP, he emigrated to Switzerland immediately after the Nazis seized power in 1933, then on to Barcelona and Ibiza, and later to the United States, where he changed his last name to “Broner” in 1944. Back in Ibiza, he founded the artists’ association Grupo Ibiza 59 in 1959 with Erwin Bechtold, Hans Laabs, Katja Meirowsky, Egon Neubauer, Heinz Trökes, Bob Munford, Antonio Ruiz, and Bertil Sjöberg; the group disbanded in 1964.
