Räderscheidt, Anton Figuration (Le tapis volant) Mixed media on stiff vellum. 1957. 65 x 48 cm. Monogrammed “AR” in gray with a brush in the lower right and dated; on the reverse, bears the estate stamp, signed there by Gisèle Räderscheidt, with the estate number and title. With an appealing sense of rhythm, the artist places abstract, line-drawn figurative outlines—vividly accented with a brush in red—over broad, block-like areas of color applied with a palette knife. Despite being limited to red, blue, and gray, his reduced palette achieves a highly vibrant effect. After Expressionist-Constructivist beginnings, Anton Räderscheidt developed into one of the most prominent representatives of New Objectivity and achieved great success early in his career. Around 1957, influenced by the West German art scene, Informel, and the École de Paris, Räderscheidt made the transition to abstraction and largely turned away from representational art.
