7186 - Meistermann, Georg

Meistermann, Georg Untitled (Violet on Light Gray and Blue) Oil on canvas, mounted on hardboard, in an artist’s frame. Circa 1958/59. 20 x 61.5 cm. Herold 416. Meistermann subtly balances the color fields—textured by the linen weave—against one another, creating a floating effect of the cropped forms within the painting’s wide landscape format. The deep brown at the center of the composition appears like a force field, pushing the lighter sections with their slanted contours toward the sides. “‘Human life is enveloped in color.’ This is Meistermann’s central artistic and art-philosophical insight. This principle was also his artistic program.” (meistermann-gesellschaft.de, accessed September 7, 2026). Trained at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Werner Heuser, Heinrich Nauen, and Ewald Mataré, he was forced to interrupt his studies during the Nazi era and was banned from exhibiting. Later, drawing on Late Cubism and influenced by Alfred Manessier, he developed an increasingly abstract style.
