Trier, Hann [*] Abstract Composition Monotype and watercolor on lightly textured vellum. 1947. 54.4 x 78 cm. Monogrammed “hT” (ligated) in black with a brush in the lower right and dated; inscribed “# 741 O” on the reverse (by another hand). An early monotype by the artist, whose visual language shows a certain affinity with Juan Gris. Furthermore, the theme of movement takes center stage: on the one hand through the formal language, and on the other, the very process of creating the monotype—in which wet paint is applied to the plate and then pressed onto the paper—already implies movement. The traces of this process are clearly visible on the reverse. In 1947, the year the work was created, the artists’ circle known as the Donnerstagsgesellschaft formed around Hann Trier.
