Zimmermann, Mac Fischer Gouache and pen in black and opaque white on cardboard. 1957. 64.5 x 50 cm. Signed "Mac Zimmermann" in black pen and inscribed "4 IX/4" in the lower right corner. Knapp/Petersen 506. An impressive, large-format work by the Surrealist Mac Zimmermann: Against a striking, flat background in blue and brown, two delicate figures drawn in black and white with their characteristically elongated limbs stand out. They are fishermen setting out to catch fish with their long nets. The unrecognizable faces, like the depiction of the figures as a whole, have a mysterious and fantastical quality. Mac Zimmermann studied at the Stettin School of Applied Arts and worked in Hamburg from 1934 onward as a set designer, press illustrator, and art teacher. He moved to Berlin in 1938 and began creating his first fantastical paintings in 1940. In 1946, the Berlin-based Gerd Rosen Gallery organized his first major exhibition. - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
