Thiemann, Hans Transparent Realm Oil on canvas. 1947. 30.5 x 41 cm. Signed "hans thiemann" in red with a brush and dated in the lower left corner of the painting. Essen 57. Thiemann constructs a unique, imagined visual world beyond reality, rather than merely alienating it. Echoes of landscape merge with mysterious objects and constructs in a composition full of tension, complemented by an ornamental, regular pattern of small dots of great aesthetic appeal. Around 1933, the artist turned “to that metaphorical, abstract formal language that would henceforth define his visual world. It led him back to the basic elements of abstract painting—point, line, and plane—in the spirit of his teacher Kandinsky.” With this elementary formal language, however, he constructs a visual world rich in metaphor, verging on the poetic. “Here, the affinity with his second great teacher at the Bauhaus—Klee—becomes palpable.” (Essen, p. 15). Shortly before this painting was created, in 1946, the first major exhibition of his works—presented alongside those of Trökes, Zimmermann, and others as the “Gruppe der Fantasten”—took place at the Gerd Rosen Gallery in Berlin; in 1947, his first solo exhibition was held there as well.
