7162 - Brauer, Arik

Brauer, Arik Untitled (Blue Cloud) Gouache on vellum. Probably around 1965. 16.6 x 14.2 cm. Signed "BRAUER" in blue pen at the bottom left and inscribed "for my best friends." Like a fantastical dreamscape, the deep-blue cloud floats in the sky against a red circle of mist; within its curves are dark holes and, grouped around them, amorphous forms in vivid colors, surreal constructions, and a small green bird. The miniature landscape beneath this psychedelic formation, however, remains trapped in a sulfurous yellow-brown. “His friend Ernst Fuchs described Brauer as a mystic, a romantic whose sphere of experience had emerged through his engagement with nature. Arik Brauer conjured images from his worldview—images that also sprang from his hunger for experiences of nature. In fact, a responsible approach to nature and the environment was an essential part of his reflections.” (Jewish Museum Vienna, jmw.at, accessed September 19, 2026). – Included: Another drawing, colored chalk on machine paper. This unsigned sheet, resembling a child’s drawing, may have been created by one of Brauer’s children.
