Echtermeyer, Curt Surreal Scene Pastel on handmade paper, mounted on backing board. 85.2 x 63.6 cm. Using vivid colors, Echtermeyer depicts an enigmatic scene. Against a luminous sky with a red sun and colorful vegetation, a monumental black figure rises in the center. Only a skull emerges from the impenetrable darkness of the body, thereby intensifying its menacing presence. The two pale, nearly naked figures in the foreground also bear skulls, heightening the unsettling contrast between death and the exuberant colorfulness of the surroundings. This pastel is characteristic of Echtermeyer’s surreal visual world, filled with enigmatic figures and scenes that are difficult to interpret.
