Fautrier, Jean Reclining Nude Woman Brush and pen in black (faded) on vellum. 1946. 23.2 x 36 cm. Monogrammed "f" and dated in pencil in the lower right corner. The figure, rendered with linear, calligraphic elegance, floats in the bright pictorial space and, with its organically curved, soft forms, seems to emerge from the space like a vision. With every trace of movement left by the paint on the sheet, Fautrier illustrates the spontaneous, dynamic creative process rather than working toward a planned result. As early as the 1920s, Fautrier developed a gestural painting style, thereby becoming a precursor of the Informel movement; his first solo exhibition took place in 1924. However, his artistic breakthrough did not come until shortly before this work was created, namely in 1945 with the exhibition of his “otages” at the Galerie René Drouion. Provenance: Jean Paulhan, Paris Kornfeld, Bern (both according to handwritten annotations by Galerie Ciranna on the reverse) Formerly Galleria Ciranna, Milan (with its round stamp on the reverse) Private collection, Cologne - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not indicated in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
