Sprotte, Siegward Mountain Landscape Watercolor over pencil on PM Fabriano vellum. 1946. 46 x 65 cm (mat cutout). Signed “S. Sprotte” in dark blue with a brush and dated in the lower right corner of the painting. An early, large-format work by the great landscape painter Sprotte. As early as the late 1930s, the artist had been spending working stays in the mountain village of Colfosco in the Dolomites. This is likely an impression from one of those trips, which Sprotte depicts here from an elevated vantage point. As early as the 1930s, during his time with Carl Hagemeister, he began exploring Chinese painting techniques, and later, in 1941, he co-authored the essay “On the Chinese Influence in Art” with Hermann Kasack. The influence of this exploration is already clearly evident in this strikingly composed mountain landscape.
