Meidner, Ludwig Still Life with Herring, Bottle, and Onions Oil on painting board. 1963. 59.5 x 49.5 cm. Monogrammed "LM" in red with a brush and dated in the lower right corner. A simple meal. But first, the arrangement on the kitchen table serves as a model for Meidner. “The painting must be done quickly so that the feast can still be prepared reasonably fresh afterward.” (Thomas Grochowiak, Ludwig Meidner, Recklinghausen 1966, p. 211). With a swift, soft, and loose brushstroke, the artist captures the gutted, silvery-shimmering fish and the onions against a warm, orange-toned background, which is enriched by the striking contrast between the light-colored bowl and the dark bottle. We thank Erik Riedel, Ludwig Meidner Archive at the Jewish Museum, Frankfurt am Main, for his kind comments dated August 22, 2025.
