Wittenberg, Jan Child's Head Oil on wood. 20 x 20.4 cm. Signed “Jan Wittenberg” in blue-gray with a brush in the upper right corner; on the reverse, the artist’s address stamp and a (faint) white chalk inscription reading “67.” Against a milky-white background, Wittenberg delicately renders the downy head of a toddler in a white shirt. Against the light color palette and in this small, intimate format, the child’s eyes and lips shine with particular expressiveness. A student of Floris Arntzenius and the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, he gained renown particularly for his finely executed, subdued works in small formats. He created numerous still lifes, portraits—especially of children and babies—landscapes, and depictions of animals. - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
