Lehmann, Jean "Bergstraße Etzenhausen" (Winter Street in Dachau) Oil on canvas. 1932. 70 x 100 cm. Signed "Jlls" (scratched into the wet paint) and dated at the bottom center left; on the reverse, the work number "47" is written in red with a fiber-tip pen, and the title is written in black on the stretcher bar. Shimmering expanses of snow in subtly nuanced shades of white stand in expressive contrast to the rich, dark tones of a winter day in rural Etzenhausen, a part of Dachau that has been known as an artists’ village since the 19th century and is closely connected to the Dachau artists’ colony. With lively brushstrokes and short palette knife movements, the artist models the impasto layers of paint into a balanced composition. The signature abbreviation “JLLS” stands for Jean Lehmann Lucerne St. Moritz/Switzerland. Provenance: Dachau museums and galleries (since the 1970s) Owned by the Dachau City Council (since ca. 1978/80) Family collection, Dachau Private collection, Southern Germany Exhibition: Galerie Samuelis Baumgarte, 50th-anniversary exhibition marking the gallery’s founding, Bielefeld 2025, pp. 186–187 (with illustration, titled there “Winter Street in Dachau”) - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
