Tappert, Georg Reclining Female Nude Watercolor and pencil on sketchbook paper. 1937. 31.7 x 47.8 cm. Signed "Georg Tappert" in black pen and dated in the lower right corner. With broad brushstrokes, Tappert renders the reclining female form with precision, unvarnished honesty, and immediacy. His lively, spontaneous style reflects the impulsiveness with which the artist approaches his subject and with which he unsparingly depicts even those parts that appear misshapen due to foreshortening. At the same time, the delicacy and sensitivity of the watercolor rendering in the surrounding area—with its nuanced, richly varied shades—lend the fair-skinned female figure a certain translucence and vulnerability, despite her voluptuous physicality. After the founding of the “November Group” in 1918, Tappert taught at the Schöneberg Art School and the Reimann School beginning in 1919. In the 1920s and 1930s, he often painted women from Berlin’s nightclubs, variety theaters, cafés, and the circus and theater worlds.
