Wohlers, Julius Buchenwald near Himmelpforten Oil on canvas. Circa 1930. 74 x 60 cm. Signed twice: "J. WOHLERS" in blue with a brush on the lower right and in reddish brown with a brush on the lower left. Wohlers renders the sunlit North German forest landscape in a spring-like, bright, luminous palette of green, blue, and brownish-pink, using an impressionistic, loose brushstroke with frequent dotting. Trained at the Academy in Berlin from 1886 to 1889, he was among the founding members of the Hamburg Artists’ Club in 1897, whose plein air paintings in vibrant colors caused a stir at the time. He found his favorite landscape subjects in the area around Himmelpforten and in the Altes Land. In 1943, a bombing raid destroyed a large portion of his early paintings.
