Ronget, Elisabeth Reclining Figure Oil on canvas. Probably the 1930s. 65.3 x 100.4 cm. Signed "RONGET" in black with a brush in the lower right corner. Elisabeth Ronget, born in 1899 in Konitz, West Prussia, grew up in Hanover. In the early 1930s, she moved to Paris, where she studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Her encounter with André Lhote and his moderate form of Cubism had a formative influence on her. In the 1930s, Ronget developed her own visual language, combining Cubist decomposition of form with a soft color palette. In our “Reclining Figure” as well, Ronget translates figure and space into a structure of contrasting planes. The relaxed posture of the propped-up woman contrasts with the strictly geometric structure of the composition. Body and interior merge almost seamlessly, while muted shades of blue, green, and pink meet bold reds, oranges, and yellows. In this way, Ronget combines her Cubist-influenced formal language with a vibrant, warm color palette, lending the tranquil scene a dynamic tension.
