Dressler, August Wilhelm "The Braid" Oil on painting board. 1925. 49.5 x 41 cm. Signed “DRESSLER” in black with a brush in the lower right corner and with the artist’s monogram; signed again on the reverse as “A.W. Dressler”; titled; inscribed “Berlin W35 Potsdamerstr 81D”; and marked “19” in red with a colored pencil. With a dreamy gaze, the young woman braids her long hair into a plait. The dimly lit interior lends the intimate scene a quiet, almost ethereal atmosphere. Her rigid, almost doll-like appearance already reveals a visual language that would become characteristic of Dressler’s figures. The work belongs to his early oeuvre and demonstrates his interest in depicting quiet, everyday moments in a uniquely condensed atmosphere. Dressler, one of the stylistically influential representatives of New Objectivity, studied at the academies in Dresden and Leipzig from 1906 to 1913. He then moved to Berlin as a freelance artist and joined the November Group.
