Macke, Helmuth "Siena" Watercolor over pencil on vellum. 1929. 30 x 37 cm (mat cutout). Signed "Helmuth Macke" in black pen at the lower right, dated and titled. In an expressionist, abstract style, Helmuth Macke—cousin of August Macke—depicts this dramatically composed, skillfully painted watercolor landscape near Siena. The artist returned from France after World War I, severely wounded. From 1906 to 1909, Macke studied under the Dutch artist Jan Thorn-Prikker at the School of Crafts and Applied Arts in Krefeld, alongside Heinrich Campendonk, among others. In 1909, he met Franz Marc at Lake Tegernsee and, from 1910 to 1911, had contact with the Blue Rider circle; in 1912, through Erich Heckel, he also came into contact with members of Die Brücke in Berlin. During the Nazi era, his works were deemed “degenerate” and some were destroyed. A large portion of his oil paintings and watercolors were burned in 1943 during a bombing raid on Krefeld.
