Oppenheimer, Max Painting and Music Color lithograph on stiff vellum. 1919. 75 x 65 cm (82.5 x 68 cm). Signed "Mopp." Edition of 50 numbered copies. Not listed in Stix/Osborn; Pabst L 14. The artist’s hands are the focal point of the composition, surrounded by tools of the two arts—painting and music: a violin with a bow and sheet music, as well as a paintbrush, palette, and tools. The lines of the composition radiate outward from the center of the picture in a highly dynamic and expressive manner. Oppenheimer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. After study trips throughout Europe, he lived in Berlin beginning in 1911, where he was supported by the publisher Paul Cassirer. The renowned Thannhauser Gallery in Munich dedicated a solo exhibition to “MOPP,” as Oppenheimer began calling himself in 1912. In 1915, he moved to Switzerland, then back to Berlin and Vienna, where he exhibited with the Hagenbund. Defamed by the Nazis as a “degenerate” artist, he emigrated to Switzerland in 1938, then to New York. There he lived in great seclusion until his death. Through his engagement with Kokoschka and Schiele, he created expressive works, some influenced by Cubism and Futurism. International exhibitions have established him as one of the most important representatives of Austrian art from the interwar period. A magnificent print with beautifully coordinated colors and a border. One of the major works in Max Oppenheimer’s graphic oeuvre. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
