Haklo, J. "The Iron Rolling Mill" Watercolor, pen and black chalk, pencil, and colored papers, collaged, on gray vellum. 1918/24. 31.8 x 39.8 cm. Signed “Haklo” in pencil and dated on the lower right; monogrammed “JH” and dated “1919” on the lower left; and later signed (or possibly by another hand), dated, and titled in black pen on the reverse of the frame cover. Tiny people keep the machinery of the iron rolling mill running; everything is collaged by the artist with a relief-like three-dimensionality. With remarkable finesse and attention to detail, he densely condenses the industrial activity within the limited picture area, arranged layer upon layer, allowing the metal to shimmer silvery in between, and creating an impressive collage of human hard labor and industrial processes that mesh together like gears. Provenance: Gift from the artist to the previous owners In the family’s possession in Hesse ever since - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
