Poelzig, Hans Architectural Sketches and Designs from the Estate Approx. 103 sheets and 10 sketchbooks. Various techniques (charcoal, pencil, colored chalks, and colored pencils) on various types of paper. 1916–30. Up to approx. 40 x 27 cm. Some are dated. This collection reveals a dazzling panorama of Expressionist architecture and Poelzig’s major projects, as well as his diverse imaginary buildings: Crystalline architectural visions and silhouettes, iconic drawings for the most influential Gesamtkunstwerk in his oeuvre—the Großes Schauspielhaus Berlin—as well as designs for Dresden and the I.G. Farben buildings in Frankfurt am Main are featured. In addition, Poelzig’s sketchbooks contain not only a multitude of architectural ideas but also his handwritten transcript of his significant Werkbund speech. This pivotal part of his artistic legacy touches on all of Poelzig’s major projects—his characteristically undulating arched forms and swelling organic, vegetal elements, on the one hand, and the clear functionalism of his designs for public buildings and industrial architecture, on the other— and it reveals in many ways the uniqueness and experimental power of his formal variations, the virtuoso richness of thought and fundamental rhythmic melody of his architectural language, and a veritable Baroque creative zest. The crystalline, translucent forms—similar to those developed by Bruno Taut, Wassily Luckhardt, and Hans Scharoun for their permanent structures or monuments—recur time and again in Poelzig’s work and underscore his eminent significance within the contemporary architectural movement. Particularly in the designs for the Großes Schauspielhaus Berlin, Poelzig’s work is virtually indistinguishable from that of Marlene Moeschke, his wife and collaborator. – Included: An inventory list and complete photographic documentation of the collection.
