Brockmann, Gottfried Dancing Figurines Zinc wire on black cardboard, mounted in a wooden box frame. 1922/circa 1950. 32 x 27.4 cm (34.5 x 29.3 cm, frame). Using soldered zinc wires, Brockmann assembles two schematic figures, mounts the two wire forms one above the other in the center, and allows the basic stereometric forms to overlap in varying ways, as the upper figure can rotate around a central axis. In this way, his dancing figurines play with constructivist-realist concepts of space, wittily and with a touch of ironic humor. In the 1920s, Brockmann was part of the Cologne Progressive group, with particularly close ties to the painters Franz Seiwert, Heinrich Hoerle, and the photographer August Sander, and his art took on an increasingly political and social orientation. “Brockmann’s anonymized jointed doll also alludes to a polemical aspect that dominated the group of Progressive Artists: it encompasses the idea of mechanization encroaching upon humanity.” (Joachim Heusinger von Waldegg, in: Gottfried Brockmann 1903–1983, exhibition catalog, Remmert und Barth, Düsseldorf 2006, p. 23).
