Fehling, Ilse Sculptural Form Study Plaster, painted white. 1921. Approx. 33 x 25 x 22 cm. Early abstract sculpture from Fehling’s time at the Bauhaus. Basic geometric forms and large ellipsoidal elements interpenetrate one another, forming a complex, interlocking construction through which Fehling gives abstract sculptural form to her concept of an opening circular stage. Ilse Fehling, who studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1920 to 1923 under Oskar Schlemmer, Lothar Schreyer, Paul Klee, and Georg Muche, gained renown particularly for her stage costumes. During this period at the Bauhaus in Weimar, she designed the central work of a marionette theater conceived as a circular stage, which was patented.
