Ringelnatz, Joachim Market Woman with Guardian Angels Watercolor over pencil on vellum. Approx. 21.3 x 16.9 cm. Signed "J. Ringelnatz" in blue with a brush at the bottom left. Two guardian angels hover in alarm over a market woman who is at peace with herself. With loose, at times sweeping brush and pencil strokes, Ringelnatz places the corpulent woman centrally on a wide wooden bench. Spread out at her feet is a pile of fresh cabbages; sitting together on her lap are a goose and a dachshund, whose orange-red coat, in a whimsical way, resembles that of a fox. As a painter, the writer and cabaret artist Ringelnatz also enjoyed great success in the 1920s, until he was defamed by the Nazis as “degenerate,” fell into complete poverty, and died far too young of tuberculosis.
