7066 - Kubin, Alfred

Kubin, Alfred The Scholar with His Dog Black pen over pencil on cadastral paper. Circa 1935. 31.6 x 20 cm. Signed "Kubin" in black pen in the lower right corner. In his work, Alfred Kubin often oscillates between fantastical dream visions and more illustrative or satirical compositions. This depiction appears to be a scathing critique of the scholarly establishment. In a dense network of lines, the scholar with a walrus-like beard strides through the darkness of the world with his faithful dog. A medal on his lapel identifies him as a highly esteemed thinker—yet in the darkness, without his faithful dog, he seems quite disoriented and stares into space as he strides along the stony path, holding his index finger up in a warning gesture —the painful downfall of the arrogant intellectual seems inevitable.
