Kubin, Alfred The Nightmare and the Girl Pen and ink in black, with watercolor, on vellum. Circa 1900/03. 28 x 18.3 cm. Signed “Kubin” in pen and ink in black in the lower right corner. La Belle et la Bête: Nightmares and eerie dream figures dominate Alfred Kubin’s imagery. Here, the demonic beast approaches the girl sitting upright, who appears to be trapped in a dark daydream of unconscious worlds—the “Other Side.” In his entirely unique aesthetic, the artist uses a multitude of hatching strokes, drawn with feverish vehemence, to render figures that stand out brightly against the dark background, and masterfully plays with contrasts such as black and white or beautiful and terrifying. His visual creations consistently reflect Kubin’s own fears and states of mind and frequently draw upon the motifs of Dark Romanticism.
