Hauser, Carry "THE DOG-EATER" Watercolor and pencil on lightweight cardboard. 1925. 40 x 30.2 cm. Signed "Carry Hauser" in pencil at the bottom right (slightly faded), with the artist’s monogram "CH" in black pen, and dated; titled in pencil at the bottom left. Cabuk, p. 361/24. Hearts and knives, blood and flowers—the idyllic and the terrifying stand in stark contrast to one another, and even the loving brushwork underscores the drama of the subject. In particular, the works of George Grosz, Ludwig Meidner, and Otto Dix influenced Hauser’s 1920s oeuvre, which can be situated between Expressionism and New Objectivity. “Carry Hauser’s innovative visual concepts in painting and printmaking (...) secure him a pioneering role among Austrian modernists. The esteem in which the Austrian painter and writer is held is based on the unmistakable distinctiveness and originality of his artistic expression. Based on the systematic documentation of his life and work, Hauser’s fundamental significance for the establishment of Modernism in Austria can now be reassessed.” (Agnes Husslein-Arco, in: Carry Hauser, Monograph and Catalog Raisonné, Belvedere, Vienna 2012, p. 7).
