Dix, Otto Study for "Three Women" Carpenter's pencil on yellowish tracing paper. Circa 1924–26. Approx. 34 x 18.5 cm. Signed “DIX” in carpenter’s pencil lower right. Lorenz NSK 7.1.30. It took a whole series of quick sketches and studies before he arrived at the final concept and composition of his 1926 painting “Three Women” (Löffler 1926/1) from 1926—a painting that Otto Dix exhibited only once during his lifetime. He was too afraid of facing another trial for “obscenity.” Three prostitutes of very different types embody both sexual desire and transience, symbolized by the three stages of life. The preparatory study presented here still differs significantly from the final conception and is initially limited to two figures in a lavishly decorated interior. The drawing is known to Dr. Ulrike Lorenz and is listed in the catalog raisonné under the number “Lorenz NSK 7.1.30.” Provenance: Sotheby’s, Milan, online auction February 18, 2020, Lot 46 Private collection, Rhineland - Please request condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
