Grunwaldt, Paul "Alt Reddevitz" Watercolor on textured watercolor paper. 1921. 26.2 x 35 cm. Monogrammed "P.G." and dated; below that, titled and illegibly inscribed in brown-red with a brush; on the reverse, bearing the artist’s address stamp twice, numbered "No. 20" in black with a pen, and inscribed in pencil by another hand. The coastal landscape, characterized by flat, prismatic forms and vibrant colors, features in the center a solitary fisherman, darkly silhouetted, whose color blends into the surrounding nature. Above him, sunlight breaks through the clouds in broad, wedge-shaped streaks, lending the scene a peculiarly ethereal atmosphere. This tendency toward a flat, highly colored, and simplified approach to landscape is also evident in the artist’s other watercolors from this period and points to Grunwaldt’s engagement with the avant-garde trends of Berlin’s art scene in the early 1920s. - Please ask for condition reports for the lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
