Nauen, Heinrich Park Landscape Colored chalks on gray-brown vellum. 1920. 38.3 x 33 cm. Not listed in Drenker-Nagels/Malcomess. In vibrant, summery colors and angular yet flowing forms, Nauen depicts here a section of the park at Dilborn Castle near Brüggen, where the artist spent his happiest and most artistically productive years from 1911 to 1931 together with his wife. Time and again, he found new subjects here, often with a distinctly life-affirming aura. Beginning in 1911, Nauen devoted his landscape painting “exclusively to the park and the vast landscape surrounding Dilborn Castle, which, with its trees and bushes, glistening ponds, and flowers and blossoms, offered him a wealth of the most diverse motifs.” (Klara Drenker-Nagels, Heinrich Nauen, Cologne 1996, p. 62). The works created there are striking examples of Nauen’s colorful Expressionism, which is already evident here in the distinctly harsher and more angular formal language of his late Expressionist style. In 1918, Nauen returned home from World War I deeply shaken. From 1921 onward, he taught at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In 1937, some of his paintings were featured in the “Degenerate Art” exhibition in Munich, and Nauen also lost his teaching position at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
