7038 - Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig

Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig Sailboat on Lake Müggelsee Charcoal on thin vellum. Circa 1912. 19.8 x 15.3 cm. Signed “ELKirchner” in charcoal pencil (later) at the bottom center; on the reverse, bearing the Karlsruhe estate stamp “E.L. KIRCHNER NACHLASSDRUCK” (Lugt 15470 d). Here, Kirchner sketches a scene at Berlin’s Müggelsee: in the foreground, two bathers can be seen among small bushes; on the right, a dock leads into the water, with a sailboat moored on it. The Müggelberge hills stretch out in the background. To provide a more precise sense of location, Kirchner often included the Müggelturm in his views of Lake Müggelsee; however, he omits it in this quick sketch. The small sheet appears to be a detail from a larger composition. The signature was apparently added to the paper some time later. The Karlsruhe estate stamp also suggests that the sheet initially came into the possession of the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe as part of the estate settlement.
