Hauptmann, Ivo "Hamburg" Watercolor and black chalk on handmade paper, mounted on cardboard. 1909. 27 x 40.4 cm. Signed “Ivo Hauptmann” in pencil and dated at the lower right; titled at the lower left; later inscribed on the cardboard to Erik Blumenfeld. Early watercolor. A sense of vibrancy permeates the cityscape, rendered with short, light brushstrokes and clear black contours. Hauptmann was deeply engaged with the effects of color and light; he was a co-founder of the Berlin and Hamburg Secession.
