Folkerts, Poppe Tjalk off Leerort Oil on canvas. 1938. 60 x 80 cm. Signed "Poppe Folkerts" in brown with a brush in the lower right corner; inscribed "Leerort" on the back of the stretcher. Folkerts captures the movement of the water in this summery North German river landscape—with its bright light and sunny atmosphere—with such powerful vitality and intensity that the lapping of the waves seems almost audible. His impasto application of paint, with its Impressionist-like looseness, the apt use of light, and clear color values create spatial depth and radiance. Leerort, situated at the confluence of the Ems and Leda rivers in East Frisia, appears only as a few red roofs, while the riverbank and the tjalk sailing briskly—a Wadden Sea sailing vessel designed for shallow waters—take center stage in the composition. Folkerts, the painter-sailor, frequently sailed upstream on the Ems and, here as well, gazes out at the landscape from the water.
