Stekker, Martin Backyards (“Tenement Buildings in Schmargendorf”) Oil on canvas. Circa 1935. 44.5 x 66 cm. Signed “for Martin Stekker Ruth Kretschmer-Stekker” in black felt-tip pen on the reverse of the stretcher bar, along with the title. Stekker G 83. Where today’s Berlin-Schmargendorf is densely built up, meadows and thickets once surrounded the detached tenement buildings. Nevertheless, the monotonous gray sky and the dull brown of the houses convey the oppressive mood of the time. From 1933 to 1945, Martin Stekker lived and worked in secret, as he was ostracized for standing firmly by his Jewish wife. This painting was likely created during that period. On the reverse, a fragment of another composition.
