Stekker, Martin Man with a Gray Horse Oil on canvas. Circa 1910. 44 x 66 cm. On the reverse side of the frame, the estate stamp is present; signed there in black ballpoint pen: "Ruth Kretschmer, née Stekker." Stekker G 53. A horse and a man side by side: a completely unspectacular, understated scene that nevertheless develops a special charm through its light-filled atmosphere and contemplative, tranquil mood. The composition, dominated by horizontal parallels, is characterized by mostly light, finely nuanced colors. Stekker’s brushwork here is clearly rooted in Impressionism, and the flatness of the broad brushstrokes causes the masterfully modeled figure of the horse to blur into the background—a phenomenon frequently observed in the artist’s paintings. Provenance: From the artist’s estate Private collection, Berlin Lit.: *Poesie im Alltag. Der Zeichner und Maler Martin Stekker*, ed. C. Gerner, exhibition catalog, Museum Reinickendorf, Berlin 2015, ill. 86, p. 77 - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is listed in the catalog only in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
