Corinth, Lovis "Ethnic Group with City" Graphite, black and colored chalks on vellum. 1920. 24.8 x 32.4 cm. Signed "Lovis Corinth" in pencil in the lower right corner and titled in black chalk. Broad, loosely drawn, and sweeping chalk lines depict the scene, the motif of which belongs to the cycle “Tournament from the Time of Henry VIII,” published in 1920 by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin (Schwarz L 430 XV), though it was never realized as a lithograph. With a sketchy simplicity and a light hand, Corinth brings the scene to life with a horseman in the foreground, masterfully demonstrating how he mentally grasps and organizes the multi-figure composition, captures its essence with just a few strokes, and is thereby able to draw from a seemingly endless reservoir of artistic ideas for his significant cycles. Provenance: Henning Lohner Collection, Berlin Exhibition: Kunsthalle Emden, Henri and Eske Nannen Foundation and Otto van de Loo Donation, DL 2012/1 (with its adhesive label on the back of the frame, where it is titled and labeled) - We ask that you request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
