Corinth, Lovis "Wedding in the Church" Colored chalks on vellum. 1920. 24.8 x 32.3 cm. Signed "Lovis Corinth" in pencil lower right; titled lower left. With a generous and swift, light hand, the artist outlines the scene, rich in figures, using broad chalk strokes and hatching that—characteristic of Corinth’s drawing technique—mostly run diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. Corinth incorporates the sketch-like approach of this drawing into his lithograph “Wedding in the Church,” created for the series “Tournament from the Time of Henry VIII,” published in 1920 by Fritz Gurlitt, Berlin (Schwarz L 430 XV). Provenance: Karl & Faber, Munich, Auction 205, Dec. 9, 2003, Lot 275 Henning Lohner Collection, Berlin Exhibition: Kunsthalle Emden, Henri and Eske Nannen Foundation and donation by Otto van de Loo, DL 2008/5 (with their adhesive label on the back of the frame, where it is titled and labeled) - Please request condition reports for the lots, as the condition is only indicated in the catalog in exceptional cases. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalog.
