7006 - Gorbatoff, Konstantin

Gorbatoff, Konstantin "Capri" Watercolor on vellum. 1927. 38 x 51.4 cm. Signed "K. Gorbatoff" in black brush paint on the lower left and dated; signed "Gorbatoff" in pencil on the backing board, dated and titled. Gorbatoff depicts his view of Capri in light, transparent colors. Densely clustered houses line the ascending street, while the island’s striking rock formations rise in the background. Individual figures enliven the scene. The loose brushwork and the interplay of light and color lend the painting a cheerful, southern atmosphere. Capri held a special place in Gorbatoff’s oeuvre. The artist first visited the island in 1912 on a scholarship and returned there repeatedly in later years. After emigrating from Russia, he settled in Berlin in 1926. Italy, and Capri in particular, remained favorite subjects of his paintings. This watercolor is a beautiful example of his numerous depictions of the island and combines the characteristic Mediterranean architecture with Capri’s impressive landscape.
