Mosson, George Silver Bowl with Peonies Oil on canvas. 60 x 75 cm. Signed “George Mosson” in violet with a brush in the lower left corner; on the reverse side of the stretcher, an old studio or exhibition label bears the artist’s name and the work number “2164.” A picture of opulence: Peonies in full bloom, cut short and arranged as a shimmering cloud of pink-and-white blossoms in a glossy, polished flat silver bowl. With a loose brushstroke, Mosson models the impasto-applied colors, lending the surface a relief-like vitality. “It was above all his floral still lifes that had made Mosson famous at the beginning of the century: ‘The new color sensations […] achieved through this Impressionist art—which retreats into the charm of the subject itself—in pure still lifes are evident in Mosson’s color-rich floral compositions’” (Richard Hamann, German Painting in the 19th Century, Leipzig/Berlin 1914, p. 302, cited from smb.museum, accessed September 11, 2026). George Mosson trained at the Berlin Academy under Carl Steffeck and Hermann Freese. He was one of the founding members of the Association of the XI and the Berlin Secession, which opposed German academic art. In 1914, he joined the Free Berlin Secession.
