Milles, Carl Standing Woman Bronze with a dark brown patina, mounted on a black stone base. ca. 1905. Approx. 45.5 x 18 x 15 cm. Signed “Carl Milles” on the back above the base, as well as bearing the foundry mark “H. Bergman Cire perdue.” Carl Milles is considered one of Sweden’s most important sculptors and gained international renown for his monumental sculptures and fountains. While studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was influenced by Auguste Rodin. He received numerous commissions in Europe and the United States, where he lived in Detroit beginning in 1931. In 1951, he returned to Sweden and lived at Millesgården near Stockholm, which remains an art museum and sculpture park to this day. He had his bronzes—such as our *Standing Woman with a Chicken in Her Arms*—cast at Scandinavia’s oldest art foundry, Herman Bergman Konstgjuteri AB in Stockholm. A magnificent cast with a warm-toned patina. Total height with base: approx. 51 cm.
