MAISON JANSEN, "Au Chardon" table lamp, Paris, ca. 1970. Brass, embossed, cast, and partially patinated; round, black-lacquered metal base. Unsigned. "Au Chardon" model. A monumental, sculptural composition in the shape of a thistle plant rises from a circular plinth. At the base are ornamentally arranged, characteristically textured water lily leaves and bulb-like forms, from which knobby, relief-like stems rise. Crowned by a large, spherical thistle flower with a finely hammered, sculpturally textured surface. A single-flame burner integrated into the center of the foliage. The “Au Chardon” model is one of Maison Jansen’s most striking and boldly designed creations from the Hollywood Regency period. It combines floral elegance with the rough, powerful texturing of Brutalism. In good, age-appropriate original condition. The brass features a beautiful, natural patina and minimal signs of oxidation. The black lacquer base shows visible scuffs and signs of age. H: approx. 63 cm.
