In the work “Homage to Keith ‘2’,” the popular German artist, comedian, and musician Otto Waalkes combines visual references to international Pop Art with symbols of German pop culture. The motif depicts a characteristic full-figure in an iconic pose, wearing a hat and tie, whose contours and internal structures are rendered in striking black and red on a light background. Waalkes unmistakably draws on the graphic. formal language and the dense labyrinth of pictograms and line drawings characteristic of the American artist Keith Haring. At the bottom of the image, the lettering featuring the song lyric “Hinterm Horizont geht’s weiter…” —a nod to Udo Lindenberg’s famous hit—adds a poetic and optimistic touch to the visual composition.
