DE ARAÚJO PEREIRA, ANTONIO (1950) "The Procession of the Dead Lord in Pelourinho" 1986 Oil on canvas. HxW: 113/150 cm. Signed and dated in black on the lower right: “Totonho 1986.” On the reverse side of the canvas, extensively labeled, dated, and signed by the artist in blue and black: PROCIßÃO DO SR. MORTO PASßANDO NA LADEIRA DO PELOURINHO... / Totonho 1986. On the reverse is the original printed and handwritten award certificate from the União Nacional dos Artistas Plásticos (U.N.A.P.), São Paulo, dated September 20, 1986. Antonio de Araújo Pereira, known by his artist name Totonho, is one of the most prominent representatives of modern Brazilian Naïve Art (Arte Naïf). His works are characterized by vibrant colors, precise architectural lines, and detailed depictions of Afro-Brazilian folk life in the state of Bahia. This monumental panoramic work depicts the Good Friday procession (Procissão do Senhor Morto) in the historic Pelourinho district of Salvador, Bahia. Against the backdrop of steep cobblestone streets and colorful colonial architecture—dominated by the imposing towers of the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco—a dense crowd moves down the Ladeira. The reverse side of the painting offers a rare and valuable historical document: there, the artist noted in his own words that this traditional procession was scarcely practiced by the people of Bahia in those years. In addition, the original award certificate—which awarded this work the gold medal at the 5th Salon of the União Nacional dos Artistas Plásticos in São Paulo on September 20, 1986—has been pasted over. Condition: good. In a simple period wooden frame. HxW: 116/156 cm.
