ACKERMANN, MAX (1887–1975) “Composition” 1953 Pastel on paper with a fine handmade edge. Mounted all around under a mat. Signed and dated “Ackermann 53” in pencil in the lower right corner; sheet size approx. 12 x 16 cm. Mat cutout approx. 14 x 18 cm. Framed 26 x 30 cm. This pastel from 1953 is a characteristic example of Max Ackermann’s masterful handling of form and color in the postwar period. As one of the most significant pioneers of abstract painting in Germany and a trained student of Adolf Hölzel, Ackermann devoted himself intensively to the rhythmic harmony of colors. Using a lyrical-abstract visual language, the artist layers cool shades of blue and violet, interspersed with dynamic accents of bright orange and green. The delicate, filigree line structures created with charcoal or pencil lend the composition a floating, almost musical sense of depth. The pastel technique allowed Ackermann to create a direct, tactile connection between drawing and painting, a quality that particularly distinguishes his works from this creative phase. In good original condition. The freshness of the pastel colors is superbly preserved. Slightly browned at the edges of the sheet due to age. Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany.
